Ruger got a SQUIRREL!!!

We have two baby squirrels living in one of the oak trees in our back side yard. I've seen them out there before and they are on the ground eating the seeds a lot of the time. In fact, the other day the two baby squirrels were sitting on one side of the tree while Ruger was sniffing around on the other.

Today I let Ruger out and when I looked over at her there was one baby squirrel right under her nose and then she proceeded to pick it up!!! I started screaming and freaking out, it was so gross. She held it very gently, but still there was a squirrel in her mouth!!! -shudder- I ran out to the side yard where she was and made her sit and distracted her with her opossum toy that thankfully happened to be close by in the backyard. It worked! She set down the squirrel, gently actually, and I grabbed her collar and the squirrel walked away. It might have been limping a little bit, but it was hard to tell. Thank God I didn't have to remove the squirrel from her mouth, ewe! I would have really lost it! Let me just add that during my squirrel freak out the bus had just recently dropped off all of the elementary neighborhood kids.

I brought Ruger back inside and called Greg semi-freaking out and he was laughing the whole time, but had me check to see if the squirrel went back up the tree...it hadn't. So, I called animal control. They were very helpful and while I was on the phone with them the squirrel came out from between the baby pool and the fence and went back into its hole in our tree. I got a call back from the animal control office and they said that everything should be fine and that if I noticed anything wrong later on to give them a call. Being me, I also asked if I needed to worry about my dog. The officer said that she would be fine and that squirrels actually didn't carry anything - who knew?

So my little squirrel catcher didn't do any damage or harm, but she sure did freak me out!
